Cleaning the entire house can be overwhelming, whether you’re doing it on your own, with a partner, or with the whole family. I’ve put together a simple weekly cleaning schedule to help us stay on top of things. Maybe it will work for you too.
Let’s talk about each day’s tasks:
Monday
I dread dusting, so maybe that’s why I get it over with the first day of the week. I don’t dust the entire house in one day, but I focus on the great room and our bedroom. If my kids will be home, then I’ll work briefly in their rooms too. When I dust, I also use the vacuum attachment to get into the corners. Usually. Ok, often. Sometimes.
Tuesday
The primary bathroom is the only one that gets full regular use, so in the other bathrooms I only wipe out the sinks and scour the toilets unless we’ve had extra people in the house. I like to keep cleaning products in each of the bathrooms so I don’t have to carry them around when I clean. I still end up making several trips up and down the stairs.
Wednesday
I swap out kitchen towels, hand towels, and bath towels.
The kitchen gets a lot of use, so I try to give it extra attention twice a week–clearing off the clutter that accumulates on the counters, scouring the sink, wiping down the appliances, etc.
My favorite kitchen tip: I use a pair of washcloths–one is in use and the other is in the dishwasher. (I fold it in half and drape it over a short row of pegs on the top rack.) When I empty the dishwasher, I trade their locations. Accordingly, I always have a fresh washcloth.
Thursday
I mop the wood floors on our main level, the laundry room, and the bathrooms getting regular use that week. If you prefer, mop the bathrooms the same day you clean them.
Friday
Most areas are fine with just a weekly vacuuming, but the mats at our front door, back door, and garage often need an additional touch up. I don’t always think of it, though, so doing the vacuuming on Fridays works for me since any entertaining we do would typically be on the weekend.
Saturday
This is a repeat of Wednesday’s tasks.
Sunday
I think of Sunday as a day of rest, so I don’t do much cleaning. It’s my day to change the sheets.
My experience with a weekly cleaning schedule
The idea is to devote a short time each day to housekeeping. Doing it this way means I don’t ever feel like I have to clean all day. I can tackle my task and then move on to something else with a sense of accomplishment.
You’ll notice that laundry and dishes aren’t on my list. I do those throughout the week as needed.
Of course, when I’m out of town, I miss some jobs. They’ll still be here when I get back. Since most things get cleaned regularly, it’s not a big deal to me if a few things are skipped temporarily.
If I have guests coming, I adapt things a bit. What works for me is to do a quick run-through of the main floor and put stray items away, and then I touch up the powder room. If a guest is allergic to cats, I make sure to run a lint roller over the furniture.
I’d love to hear about your approach!
