A dear friend introduced me to author Laura Frantz many years ago. Her books are meticulously researched and offer a captivating blend of history, romance, and faith. I’d like to share a little bit about her and highlight several of her books. I highly recommend them all!
Who is author Laura Frantz?
Laura Frantz, a bestselling and award-winning author, has loved storytelling since she was seven. She has a deep passion for history, especially the eighteenth century, and often weaves Scottish influences into her novels as a nod to her family roots. She is a direct descendant of George Hume of Wedderburn Castle in Berwickshire, Scotland, who was exiled to the American colonies after the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715. Hume later settled in Virginia and is recognized for teaching George Washington surveying. Laura treasures her heritage and is a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. While Kentucky will always feel like home, she now lives in Washington State with her husband.
I’d love to highlight several (ok, quite a few!) of the books I’ve read by author Laura Frantz.
I’ve read almost all of her books, and I’ve found them to be rich in historical detail, deeply emotional, and inspirational. Honestly, I’ve loved all of them but felt I should narrow it down a bit for you. 🙂 Strongly recommend!
A Fierce Devotion
Exiled from Acadie, Bleu Galant focuses on survival as the French and Indian War draws to a close. On his way to Virginia’s Rivanna River settlement, he meets Brielle Farrow, a woman who awakens confusing feelings in him. The way they’re drawn to each other is a beautiful part of their story. So lovely! They travel across the ocean together to explore Brielle’s family’s past and learn so much about each other as well.
The Indigo Heiress
In 1774, Juliet Catesby’s life at her Virginia family’s plantation is upended when the heir of the powerful Buchanan clan arrives. Her father has secretly promised one of his daughters in marriage to settle the family’s debt. Juliet is shocked when Leith Buchanan chooses her over her beautiful younger sister. Forced to leave Virginia, she sails to Scotland with him. In Glasgow, amid the formidable Buchanan family, Juliet discovers that the man who saved her family from ruin is now the one she must help in return.
The Rose and the Thistle
In 1715, Lady Blythe Hedley flees northern England after her father is declared an enemy of the crown for his Jacobite ties. Hidden at Scotland’s Wedderburn Castle, she hopes to stay safe, but her presence quickly becomes known. Everard Hume, newly bereaved and burdened with a volatile brother and an estate to manage, would rather send the unexpected heiress on her way. Caught in a web of intrigue and shifting loyalties, Lady Blythe must carefully choose whom to trust.
Tidewater Bride
Selah Hopewell is content to avoid marriage. She is busy helping her father run their shop and overseeing a ship of tobacco brides arriving in James Towne. Xander Renick, a prominent tobacco lord and mediator with the Powhatan nation, dedicates himself to his lands and mourns his late wife. Can two fiercely independent souls find happiness on their own? Will they realize that what they’ve been seeking has been right in front of them all along?
An Uncommon Woman
Tessa Swan is anything but a typical 18th-century woman. Raised on the western Virginia frontier with her five brothers, she is bold, unflinching, and fiercely independent. Clay Tygart, raised by the Lenape and returning as a hero from the French and Indian War, is equally uncommon. As fort commander, he keeps his distance from Tessa. When she is taken captive by the tribe he once called family, he is forced to act. Clay confronts danger, loyalty, and his own heart.
A Bound Heart
Magnus MacLeish and Lark MacDougall grew up on the same castle grounds, but their paths could not be more different. Magnus is laird of the great house and the Isle of Kerrera, while Lark tends his bees and hopes to create a tincture to help his ailing wife conceive. When tragedy strikes and his wife dies, Magnus and Lark face a storm of accusations. Banished from their island, they become indentured servants in Virginia. Amid the challenges of the New World, they discover a chance for a fresh start together.
Drawing on her own family history, author Laura Frantz delivers a vivid tale of love, courage, and survival in Colonial America.
The Mistress of Tall Acre
The American Revolution has ended, and Sophie Menzies is longing for good news. When her neighbor, General Seamus Ogilvy, returns to Tall Acre, she hopes for brighter days. But he is a widower with a young daughter in need of a mother. Facing near destitution, Sophie agrees to marry Seamus in a practical arrangement. A woman from his past appears unexpectedly, testing the bonds of this new family. Several plot twists in this one!
The Colonel’s Lady
In 1779, Roxanna Rowan arrives at the Kentucky fort commanded by Colonel Cassius McLinn, only to learn her officer father has died. Left penniless, she takes her father’s place as scrivener and soon notices the colonel’s interest in her. But Cassius harbors secrets, some connected to her father’s sudden death. The Colonel’s Lady is a gripping story of love, suspense, faith, and forgiveness.
The Frontiersman’s Daughter
This is the first of her books that I read, and I’ve read it at least twice!
Lael Click, spirited daughter of a famed frontiersman, grows up in the fragile Kentucky settlement her father founded. Her family’s past and ties to the Shawnee haunt her. Facing lost love, a dangerous feud, and the attention of a Shawnee warrior, she draws strength from the rugged land and from Ma Horn, who teaches her the healing power of herbs. When an outlander doctor arrives, Lael’s understanding of the world, God, and herself is challenged. This epic tale immerses readers in the daring lives of pioneers through the eyes of a young woman determined not to be defeated.
